Output equipment: how the exhibition speaks to a person
Light, image, sound, vibration — everything that reaches a person. The most visible part of the budget and the most treacherous: a four-metre screen people walk past without looking loses to a spyglass with a queue in front of it.
Installation laser projector
The workhorse. Runs for years and never asks for a lamp
Laser instead of a lamp: 20,000 hours without a change, instant start, mounts upside down if it has to. Lamp models are no longer specified for new exhibitions — not because they throw less light, but because someone has to change the lamp, and there is nobody to do it.
Works when
- An image larger than a physical screen — from three metres up to a whole wall
- A surface that is not flat: a model, a vault, a column, a façade
- The screen has to disappear when off: a black wall instead of a black rectangle
Falls short when
- A room with windows and no blinds. Projection is the one technology sunlight kills outright, and no amount of lumens fixes that
- Small type is needed: resolution divides across the area, and captions blur first
- People walk between the viewer and the wall — there will be shadows

Ultra-short-throw projector
You get the picture without the beam
Sits right against the surface and throws the image at almost a right angle. A person can walk up to the wall without blocking the frame with their own body — which is the whole point.
Works when
- Interactive floors and tables: the visitor stands inside the image
- Low ceilings, where a normal projector has nowhere to hang
- People need to come right up to the surface and touch it
Falls short when
- An uneven surface: the sharper the angle, the more every bump shows
- Large sizes — beyond three or four metres the geometry starts misbehaving
Where we apply it: Models and mapping
Rear projection
The projector hides behind the surface
Throws onto a translucent screen from behind. The viewer sees a glowing surface, never the machine or the beam, and casts no shadow — however many people crowd in.
Works when
- A vitrine or window that should glow from within
- Dense foot traffic right up against the image
- The image has to sit together with a real object behind glass
Falls short when
- No room behind: you need a service recess half a metre deep or more
- People look from far to the side — translucent materials have a narrower viewing angle than an ordinary screen

Mapping onto volume
Light lands along the facets of a real object
Not a device but a technique: the image is computed for the geometry of a model, a façade or a product. Needs an accurate model and blended projectors — in return the volume is real, not drawn.
Works when
- There is a physical form — a site model, a building, a product, a landscape
- The decision turns on scale: what stands where and how it connects
- Several layers have to sit over one object — was, is, will be
Falls short when
- The object is small: for anything under a metre a plain screen beside it is cheaper and sharper
- The model is not built yet — calibration is done against the real thing, not the drawing

- VIOSOсшивка и коррекция геометрии

Flat modular screen
A wall of any size that sunlight cannot bother
A module is a tile with its own LEDs, power and board. They build into a canvas of any shape, and a broken tile is replaced one tile at a time. One question is settled before purchase: is there half a metre behind for servicing, or must the modules come out from the front.
Works when
- A bright room, an atrium, a window facing the street — sunlight is no obstacle
- Non-standard proportions: a long ribbon, a vertical, a square across a wall
- Round-the-clock operation: an LED does not fade the way a projector lamp does
- The screen is an architectural element in its own right
Falls short when
- People come right up to it: at a 2 mm pitch the picture breaks into dots at about two metres, and «just take a finer pitch» is a different budget entirely
- Deep black is needed in a dark room: an LED glows a little even when off
- Weight and power: a 3×2 m canvas is already a question for the wall's load rating
- Filming: without frequency sync the video will show banding

Flexible modules
A screen that bends to fit
The same LEDs on a rubber backing: the canvas wraps a column, lies over a vault, follows the wave of a wall. Where a flat panel would leave a seam, this gives one continuous surface.
Works when
- A column, an arch, a vault, a curved wall — anywhere a flat canvas would leave a seam
- Shape matters more than resolution: from a distance the silhouette reads, not the pixel
- Temporary builds: a flexible canvas is lighter and forgives an imprecise frame
Falls short when
- Fine pitch: the more flexible the backing, the coarser the available pitch
- The radius is limited — get the minimum figure before designing the frame
- Shorter service life than flat: bending works against the solder, and it does not enjoy being rehung again and again

Volumetric forms: sphere, cylinder, cube
This screen has no viewer's seat
Ready-made LED spheres, cylinders, cubes and rings. The image wraps the whole form, so the object works for people circling it and reads the same from a balcony and from below.
Works when
- An atrium, a lobby, the centre of a room — a point people walk around
- A globe, a planet, a core, a molecule — when the subject itself is round
- An object that must read equally from a balcony and from below
Falls short when
- Text and diagrams: nothing is legible across curvature
- A tight budget: a non-standard form always costs more than the same area of flat
- Low ceilings — the object has to hang with clearance over people's heads
Manufacturers
Where we apply it: Multimedia equipment
Kinetic LED screen
A canvas that moves through the air
Modules hang on winches and change position through the show: the screen parts, gathers, becomes a wave. Image and movement are one score — you cannot reproduce it with a video.
Works when
- An opening, a launch, a show — an event with a beginning and a finale
- An atrium with a high ceiling where the movement reads from below
- An effect that cannot be reproduced by playing a video
Falls short when
- A permanent exhibition: winches need inspection regimes and permits, like any lifting gear
- People underneath the rig — that is a safety calculation, not a preference
- A quiet room: the drives are audible

- Kinetic Lightsлебёдки и светящиеся элементы, сценарное управление

Professional panel and video wall
Dull, dependable, legible
The industrial relative of a television: round-the-clock operation, portrait mounting, remote management, years without being switched off. A consumer TV in an exhibition lasts until its first summer.
Works when
- Text, drawings and archive documents have to be read
- The screen hangs for a long time and simply has to work
- A modest budget: the best ratio of cost to legibility
Falls short when
- The job is impression, not reading: a panel does not create an event
- A video wall of several panels: the bezels are always visible, and across a single image they read as a grid

Transparent screen
Data over the real object
The image hangs on glass and the exhibit shows through. The original stays original while cutaways, labels and animation lie over it as a layer. Switch it off and only glass remains.
Works when
- A vitrine holding an original that needs explaining without being covered
- A cutaway, a diagram or a trajectory laid over a real product
- When it is switched off, only glass should remain
Falls short when
- A bright room: a transparent screen is the first to lose to ambient light
- A busy background behind the glass — the image loses legibility
- A dense, saturated picture is needed: transparency works against contrast

- LG Transparent OLEDосновной поставщик прозрачных панелей

Pseudo-hologram: Pepper's ghost
A reflection in angled glass. Two hundred years and counting
The picture from a screen reflects in a semi-transparent film and appears to hang in mid-air. Nineteenth-century theatre knew this trick, and it is still the most dependable of the «holograms» — there is nothing in it to break.
Works when
- A small object with one or two people gathered around it
- A dark zone: the illusion is built on glowing in darkness
- A floating effect without glasses and without teaching the visitor anything
Falls short when
- A delegation of twenty: the illusion holds only within a narrow angle
- A bright room — the effect disappears entirely
- Small captions: put them on a separate screen alongside
Manufacturers
- Realfictionготовые витрины-кубы
- Musionсценические установки большого размера

Holographic fan display
LEDs on spinning blades. Cheap and impossible to ignore
A strip of LEDs turns fast enough that the eye assembles the trail into a whole image hanging in the air. Installed in an hour, gangs into a wall — that is how the big «floating» objects are made.
Works when
- A window, an entrance, a point that has to catch attention
- A short bright image — a logo, an object, a sign
- A wow effect on a small budget
- Retail and events, where the unit moves from venue to venue
Falls short when
- A museum exhibition proper: a spinning part at hand height is a safety and noise question
- A long story: neither the resolution nor the brightness carries content
- Filming on a phone — the camera catches the strobing
- Bright daylight washes the illusion out
Manufacturers
- HYPERVSNосновной игрок, сборки в стены

Light-field display
Volume without glasses. The honest kind
The screen emits dozens of viewpoints at once: the eyes see different things and the object turns as you move your head. Sizes are still modest and the price matches — but this is real volume, not an illusion.
Works when
- A single object to be examined from every side — a product, a molecule, a part
- Volume with no glasses and no instructions
- An exhibit for one or two people at a time
Falls short when
- A large audience and large sizes
- A limited budget: for the same money you get an interactive 3D model on an ordinary screen, and people understand it just as well
Manufacturers
- Looking Glassнастольные и настенные модели
- Voxonвоксельный объём, вид с любой стороны
Where we apply it: Holographic showcases
Autostereoscopic screen
Volume without glasses at panel money
An optical raster on an ordinary panel gives each eye its own pixels. Cheaper and larger than light-field; you pay in the narrow zone where the effect holds.
Works when
- A vitrine or pylon that people approach one at a time
- A product to be shown in volume without handing out glasses
- Volume is wanted at the price of a panel, not of an installation
Falls short when
- A group: the viewing zone is narrow, one step aside and the volume falls apart
- Horizontal resolution is divided between viewpoints: small type does not survive
- Long viewing tires the eyes more than an ordinary screen
Manufacturers
- Looking Glassсветовое поле, много ракурсов
- Dimencoавтостереоскопия со слежением за глазами
- Alioscopyрастровые панели для витрин
Where we apply it: Holographic showcases
Virtual reality
The strongest impression and the longest queue
The headset closes off the world: a person ends up where they physically cannot be. One person at a time experiences it — and the whole schedule is counted from that number.
Works when
- A place you cannot go: underground, in orbit, inside a ruined building, inside a body
- A separate zone with a queue and an attendant
- A session that can be sold on its own
Falls short when
- The main route of the exhibition: the queue forms and everything stops
- No staff nearby: fitting, adjusting, disinfecting, removing
- A school group on a timetable — the arithmetic does not work
Manufacturers
- Meta Questавтономные, массовые
- HTC Viveкорпоративные и залы

Augmented reality on a device
A layer over the real room
A tablet or phone shows the camera feed with what the room does not contain laid over it: a building completed, a mechanism running, a character. Cheap in hardware, expensive in content.
Works when
- Completing what has not survived: a ruin, a lost interior, a decommissioned machine
- Showing the invisible over the visible: flows, cutaways, processes
- An exhibit outside the building — a courtyard, a park, a street
Falls short when
- Relying on the visitor's phone with no guidance: only a fraction ever get it running
- Poor connectivity and unwillingness to install an app
- The exhibit has to work always: phones run flat, tablets get stolen

- Apple ARKitiOS, лучшее качество трекинга

Sound shower, directional audio
Audible here, silent one step away
Sound confined to a narrow zone: the visitor at the exhibit hears the story, a neighbour a metre away hears nothing, and nobody needs headphones. It cures the chief affliction of multimedia exhibitions — ten exhibits talking at once and none of them audible.
Works when
- Several exhibits with sound in one room
- A story that only the person standing here needs
- Headphones are unwelcome — foot traffic or hygiene
Falls short when
- Full bass and enveloping sound are needed
- High ceilings and heavy background noise: the zone smears
- Visitors approach from several directions
Manufacturers

Installation audio and spatial sound
Sound that has a place in the room
Sources placed around the room give sound direction and distance: a footstep on the left, a rumble overhead, a voice from one point. Half the sense of presence is made here, not on the screen.
Works when
- A large room with a single score — a panorama, a reconstruction, an immersion
- People need to be led by sound rather than by arrows on the floor
- There is a score with rhythm: silence, build, pause
Falls short when
- Scattered stands each with their own content — it will be a mess
- A reverberant room with no acoustic treatment: fix the ceiling before buying speakers

Headphones and personal audio
When the story is long and personal
From a classic audio guide to streaming audio to the visitor's phone. The only way to deliver a long text, several languages and different depths from one and the same exhibit.
Works when
- Many languages and different depths — children's, general, specialist
- A story longer than two minutes
- A quiet room where sound out loud would be out of place
Falls short when
- A family or a couple: headphones separate people who came together
- A short caption — putting headphones on costs more than reading it
- Servicing: charging, disinfecting, losses
Manufacturers
- Sennheiser MobileConnectзвук на телефон посетителя по Wi-Fi
- izi.TRAVELбесплатная платформа аудиогидов

Where we apply it: Interactive exhibition
Vibration, wind, heat, scent
What is remembered longer than the picture
Shakers in floors and benches, fans, heat, scent. Pennies next to screens, and it works disproportionately hard: the body remembers before the head does.
Works when
- A moment that should be remembered by the body: a blast, a launch, a storm, a descent
- Recreating an environment — the heat of a workshop, the damp of a trench, wind on a deck
- A young audience: a physical impression lands before text does
Falls short when
- A constant background effect — people habituate within a minute and stop noticing
- Scent: it stays in the room longer than intended, and not everyone likes it
- Allergies and sensitivities — there must be a way to bypass the zone
Manufacturers
- ButtKickerнизкочастотные шейкеры под сиденья и пол

Where we apply it: Interactive exhibition
Controlled light
The cheapest way to change a scene
Light in an exhibition does not illuminate, it narrates: singles out, extinguishes, leads, sets the rhythm. It runs on the same cues as everything else at a fraction of any screen.
Works when
- The route needs rhythm: darkness, flash, stillness
- One original has to be picked out without touching the rest of the room
- The budget has run out and the room is dull
Falls short when
- Scripted light fights the room's general lighting: separate the two from the start
- Conservation requirements — lux levels and UV are agreed with the curator
- Flashing and strobes: a medical constraint, not an aesthetic one

- ETCмузейный и театральный стандарт

Kinetics and mechanics
The exhibit genuinely moves
Actuators and mechanisms: a model opens out, a machine rotates, a cutaway parts. A different order of impression — the object is real, and it reads from the far end of the hall.
Works when
- How a product is made: shown in section, with the real form opening up
- A room where there are already too many screens and they have stopped working
- An event visible from the far end of the hall
Falls short when
- Mechanics within reach of visitors: count the duty cycle and the pinch protection
- A quiet room — drives are audible
- Someone has to maintain it: moving things wear out, screens do not
Manufacturers

Electronic ink
A label you can rewrite
The display draws power only while the image changes and reads like paper — at any angle, with nothing glowing into anyone's face. It cures an old museum ache: new attribution and a new language on the caption.
Works when
- Labels and captions that change: new attribution, new language, rotation
- A vitrine where a glowing screen would wreck the look
- No power at the point: batteries last months
Falls short when
- Motion and video — refresh is slow by nature
- Colour: colour models are noticeably paler and dearer
- Large formats cost disproportionately much
Where we apply it: Exhibition stand
Drone show
A screen the size of the sky
A swarm holds formation to a computed programme and draws three-dimensional figures in the air. The only way to get a picture hundreds of metres across with no structure at all — in many places it has already replaced fireworks: quieter, cleaner, repeatable.
Works when
- An opening, an anniversary, a city celebration — an event under open sky
- A scale that cannot be built: hundreds of metres in height and width
- A place where fireworks are barred by noise, fire risk or animal welfare
Falls short when
- Wind and precipitation: the weather window is narrow, and a reserve date belongs in the contract rather than in conversation
- Approvals: airspace, zone, time — that is weeks, not days
- Indoors: a hall flies a handful of drones, not hundreds, and the effect is quite different
- Fine graphics and text: resolution is the number of drones, and there are hundreds, not millions

Integration by Playdisplay
We are integrators: we build working exhibitions out of this kit, from the story to opening day. We know it from the rooms we designed, installed and later repaired, not from catalogues. What each item really gives you, where it will let you down, and what to swap it for when the budget will not close — we know from our own work rather than from somebody else’s promises.
In our hands an ordinary monitor becomes a display people stop at. The same monitor with no story is a noticeboard. The difference is not the monitor — it is what happens on it, and why anyone noticed.
We are independent of suppliers: no warehouse of our own, no commission on hardware. So the solution gets picked for the job rather than for the stock. Supply is handled by our partners — anything on this list, on the best terms for you. Ours is the story, the content, the interaction, the software and the integration: one hardware-and-software system, rather than boxes from five vendors who have never heard of each other.
